Weekend Bible Study
Theme of the week: Get More out of the Bible

Saturday, March 31, 2012

Since our Key Study Passage is short, we decided to print it here: “God means what he says. What he says goes. His powerful Word is sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey. Nothing and no one is impervious to God’s Word. We can’t get away from it—no matter what” (The Message). While brief, these two verses explain the life-changing impact of God’s Word—if we’re willing to study it and apply it to our lives.

Key Study Passage:

Hebrews 4:12-13

  1. Reflect

on “God means what he says. What he says goes.” What do these two short sentences tell you about your Bible?

  2. Why

do you think the translator chose to use the words “sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel”?

  3. How

has God cut into your own “doubt and defense”? According to the phrase that follows, what is the purpose of God slicing away your doubts and defenses?

  4. What

do the last two sentences of the verse tell you about God’s Word? Thinking about your own life, how do these sentences make you feel?

  5. Where

do you believe God would like to use his “surgeon’s scalpel” in your life?

Spend Time in Prayer: Reread the study passage slowly and prayerfully; thank God for specific ways his Word has changed you; ask him to reveal areas that need the “surgeon’s scalpel”; express your desire to more consistently “listen and obey.”

Hebrews 4:12-13
12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.

Prayer for the Week
Lord, may I strive to not only read your Word regularly, but to also study it carefully and apply it more consistently.
